What a root canal is
Inside every tooth there is soft tissue, the pulp, containing nerves and blood vessels. When it becomes inflamed or infected, usually because of deep decay, a fracture or a blow, you get intense pain, sensitivity to hot and cold or swelling in the gum. A root canal cleans out the inside of the tooth, disinfects the canals and seals them so the infection does not return.
Signs you may need one
Pain when chewing or out of nowhere, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, a tooth that darkens or an abscess on the gum are all reasons to come and see us. Sometimes there are no symptoms and it shows up on a routine X-ray. The sooner it is treated, the better the chances of keeping the tooth.
How we do it
Under local anaesthetic, we open the tooth and clean the canals with rotary instruments, which work more precisely and faster than manual techniques. We then seal the canals and restore the tooth. If it has lost a lot of structure, at Clínica Balaguer we can protect it with a CEREC crown or inlay in the same clinic.
In most cases treatment is completed in one or two sessions.
After treatment
It is normal to feel some discomfort when chewing for a few days. A root-treated tooth can last many years if it is properly restored and cared for like the rest: brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular check-ups.
Frequently asked questions
Does a root canal hurt?
It is done under local anaesthetic and is not usually painful. In fact, in most cases it is what takes away the pain you came in with.
Would it not be better to extract the tooth?
Wherever possible, keeping your own tooth is preferable: it preserves the bone and your bite and avoids having to replace it later.
How many visits does it take?
Usually one or two, depending on the tooth and the extent of the infection. In some cases one more visit is needed afterwards to fit a crown.
