What bruxism is
Bruxism is the involuntary habit of clenching or grinding your teeth. It usually happens at night, so many people do not know they do it until someone hears them or the dentist notices the wear. Stress, poor sleep and some bite problems can all play a part.
How to tell if you have it
Waking up with a tired or sore jaw, morning headaches, sensitive teeth, teeth that look shorter or have flat edges, or clicking when you open your mouth are common signs. At your check-up we examine your teeth, the muscles and the jaw joint to confirm the diagnosis.
Custom night guards
The most common treatment is a night guard: a rigid, transparent plate made to fit your mouth, worn while you sleep. It keeps the teeth slightly apart, spreads the force of your bite and stops the teeth wearing against each other. In most cases the muscles relax and the discomfort eases within a few weeks.
We take records of your mouth, make the guard and adjust it in the clinic. Then we check it regularly, as it may need touching up with use.
